Tsotsi

In the beginning of the film it starts with a black screen with typography and a diegetic sound from the characters talking in Afrikaans. A extreme close up short of a hand shaking dice, then it fade in to typography, then a low angle/ slow pace editing showing the dice floor down toward the camera, the props is use to indicate the character are gambling, which connote to the stereotypical which people think poor people like to gambol. In addition, European think Africans is something primitive, wild, poor, and underdeveloped. These are the most common keywords people associate with Africa.
A mid shot of a studio location showing four characters inside a small house/room, from the look of the furniture it show them in an undeveloped, poor, dirty housing. A close up shot of the table showing the table is broken, the surface is really rough this show they uses a very long time, this indicated then are really poor.
In this scene it has a stylised lighting to create a sunset natural lighting inside the room, from the lighting we know there is no electricity, to empathise their in an very bad living area, props is use to indicated the area is rundown.
A mid shot showing one of the characters, behind the character we can see an oil lamp, which empathise the environment they live in, is not fully-grown.
A high angle close up shot of the dice showing the number five and four, if they added it which means is nine, but one of the characters said is eleven, this indicated to audiences they did not educated will, show they have less knowledge, this because they poor they don’t have money to go to school to educated themselves.
A close up shot cut to other characters, from the custom, props it indicated his have more knowledge then other, they way his holding newspaper, wearing glasses this connote the stereotypical of a smart person, which show an big contrast toward other characters who’s holding a knife.
A low angle showing the characters standing on top of the ruff, which create tension on audiences and show they is powerful.
A long shot showing the location, which is take place in the ship town, from the structure of the housing, the description for them are very simply, basic, small, dirty, and grey, which is very unattractive, this empathise they living in an unemployed, undeveloped country.
The way the director position the main character Tsotsi in the front/middle, to show his the leader of the group, to empathise he is important.
The custom they wearing, is portray as a gangster style, with leather jacket, hood. The red t-shirt Tsotsi wearing it indicated danger, blood, and death to the spectator.
An high angle long title shot following the characters when they walk in to the station, in this scene we can see props is used to represent the images and what is happening in Africa. We can see an advertising broad promoting about AID and HIV showing they are surrounded by disease.
The image of Africa in the Western media reflects mostly these aspects of Africa: when we in Europe see Africa in the media, we are shown images of civil wars, corrupt governments, poverty, disease, and starving children. Consequently, people are scared of Africa and most of them would not go travelling there.
Wealth is show by props and custom, a POV shot form the main characters looking around the station at specific characters, a close up shot of a black male character holding an envelope with lots of money inside.

Space is use to create crowdedness to audiences, during the train scene, showing pack of people inside the train, to create tension on audiences, showing danger. The use of space create tenseness, uncomfortable felling, at the end of the killing scene, a mid shot inside the try showing all the people leaving the train, and left the victim inside the train, this create a loneliness, sadness, awkward felling to me as a spectator.

6.6.04 Simon Hook

The short film i have choosen is a comdey film but is portray as a Black Comdey. In this short film it begin a still image of a man and text undernife and it show( Simon Hook 1969-2004) by showing this it create a message to spectator this person is dead, which create sympathy to character. The film is film in a realistic way which comfort the convention of a British film, by being realism.

The way the camra was hild create an natural way of holding camra, empathise the character is hiding the camra from other characters, which create realism to audience.

The final scratchy merge into what was previously on the tape gives the piece a delicious sting that ties in with one of the opening lines (am trying not to give the game away here in case anybody reads this before watching this piece).

Spiecal effect is use at the end when the male character fall, it create tension on audience, showing a quick moment of the camra capture him falling down, by using this spiecal effect to make audience beileve is real. After he fall down the tape have rewine a old footage of their friends wedding day!
